Anniversary of the end of the Second Seminole War

August 14, 1842
Published: June 26, 2023

The Seminoles were an amalgamation of several Native American tribes and escaped slaves seeking freedom. The Second Seminole War, the longest and costliest war the U.S. waged against Native Americans, took place in Florida from 1835 to 1842. It was the most sustained and successful effort by slaves to win their freedom by force of arms. Thousands of Seminoles were forced to move West, though some were allowed to stay in a reservation in Florida.
